living wills

(advance directives)

You didn't choose to have to deal with a terminal health issue, but you can choose how your Doctors must deal with your ongoing treatment!

Making a living will is YOU stating what YOU want to happen!

Give some Peace of Mind to the people you care the

most about!

In New Zealand you can set down in writing your wishes which Doctors can use to withdraw certain treatment.  Written evidence is seen as the patient’s wishes and “good medical practice”.  Guidelines are set out in S 11 of the NZ Bill of Rights (1990) relating to the patient’s right to refuse medical treatment.  Unless the Doctor has reasonable grounds, they cannot ignore an Advance Directive.

We will assist you to avoid the problems that make Living Wills either ineffective.  Problems normally relate to whether the wording of the Living Will is clear and covers your wishes in circumstances when you will not be able to clarify what you want to happen.

So, what you can do now? –

  1. Decide what kind of life you would accept in different circumstances, e.g if medical advice is that you have no brain activity or brain activity is below 50% AND you have a likely survival rate of below 20% and the majority of my other primary organs have stopped functioning AND my pain levels are estimated to be above 80% …

  2. Talk openly with the people who are important to you and who have already chosen as people you trust e.g Executor/Trustee of your Will or Attorney for your Enduring Powers of Attorney about the contents of no. 1 AND

  3. Let us help you draft your Living Will AND

  4. Tell everyone in No. 2 AND

  5. Have a copy in your wallet, handbag at all times!

LET OUR TEAM ASSIST YOU TO GAIN PEACE OF MIND FOR YOU AND THE IMPORTANT PEOPLE IN YOUR LIFE.
